JRN 115 Introduction to Media Writing (3 credits)

Course Description

This course examines a variety of techniques and formats with an emphasis on news and telling the story.  Students will write for print, broadcast and the Internet.  Emphasis is on improving writing and editing and telling stories across different platforms with the primary focus on learning to write accurately and precisely.

Learning Results

Through this course, students will:
• Identify and correct errors in the Associated Press style.
• Make sound news decisions, ensuring accuracy and reliability of information.
• Write concise, well-paced copy.
• Produce copy and news releases that are accurate in grammar and detail.
• Examine legal and ethical dilemmas in journalism.
• Write attention-getting leads for print, broadcast and online media.
• Employ interviewing skills.
• Demonstrate evidence of thorough and multi-faceted reporting.
• Conduct and analyze research in media ethics.

This course consists of 10 assignments and 6 quizzes.

Learning Evaluation

The assignments range from 20 to 100 points each, and the quizzes are 10 points each for a total of 600 points possible.
